Active Listening

Active listening is a way of communicating, through responding to my clients want and needs and having a mutual understanding on what is troubling the client and what treatment plan needs to be put in place, for me as a professional to understand what has to be done for my client. Active listening can be seen or rather heard in everyday conversations, as one individual responds to the other, for example, “Hi how are you?” and the respondent actively listening by responding “I’m good how are you?”

The topic of active listening is very important in my profession of speech pathology. Being an active listener could determine how I could help my client, and what is bothering them. Actively listening could also help my client feel safe in an unsafe environment, it could also help me understand if their condition is stress induced through their personal environment. By actively listening I could also gain my client’s trust which will also help me understand as their professional how to achieve their treatment goal.

This youtube video entails on how to be an active listener.

I will demonstrate active listening in my personal world by listening carefully to what my family members are saying.
